How are you getting your magic shows? Word of mouth? Referrals? Agents? Cold calling?
Creating and sustaining a successful magic business is not easy.
You need to work hard to get your gigs. Many people think that if you create the perfect magic show (as if something like that exists), people will come out of the woodwork to hire you.
Unless you’ve got a backer with deep pockets, you gotta get the word out.
I’m old enough to remember the old days. To get shows, I had to advertise. That meant:
• Yellow Page ads
• Parenting magazine ads
• Flyers
• Newspapers (really!)
And none of those were sure things. If you really wanted to be busy, you had to proactively contact your ideal customers.
That meant first creating a show that they wanted. And anybody who says they have an all-purpose show that fits all markets is only deluding themselves.
Once the show was ready, you had to market directly to your customers. That meant:
1. Direct mail – effective but time-consuming and expensive
2. Cold calling – Cheap but demoralizing and time-consuming
To be fair, direct mail is still highly effective. But these days, you don’t have to use direct mail if you don’t want to.
That’s because technology allows you to create the perfect salesperson.
One who doesn’t sleep. Won’t ask for a raise. Never stops.
With the right approach, this salesperson is your ticket to a highly successful performing career.
Of course, I’m talking about your website.
Most magicians’ websites suck.
I’m sorry, but they do. Not all, of course. But hundreds, maybe thousands, of magicians’ websites are poorly designed and poorly written.
Back in 2021, I examined over 200 websites. I wanted to see if there was a market for my “unique set of skills” (credit: Liam Neeson) in website creation and copywriting.
Turns out there is a massive need.
Out of the 200 or so websites I examined, most looked like they were cobbled together by someone with no sense of design.
The others? The copy (“words on the site”) was so poorly written, I am amazed these folks got any work.
To build a good website, one that does its job, you need three things:
1. A deep understanding of your market(s)
2. An extensive knowledge of effective copywriting for the Internet
3. A sense of design with the right online tools
Most magicians I’ve seen put together a show they think their customers would all like. Think “magic for all occasions.”
But the reality is different. Each market is different.
Birthday parents want to book entertainment for different reasons than a company HR director.
The design or “look” of the site must appeal to the target market.
The copy must convey both an understanding of the pain points of the prospect as well as why the magician in question can best solve that problem.
Most magicians’ sites I’ve seen don’t do any of this well.
And that’s because most magicians started performing to, well, perform. Not market.
I get it. I felt the same way when I first got into magic.
But my path was different.
When I decided to try to go full-time in magic, I happened across an ad for marketing for magicians. It was for a Dave Dee course. (Remember him?)
I soaked it all up and decided I really enjoyed marketing. The psychology of it appealed to me.
For the next 20 years, I studied marketing and stayed current with the latest trends.
I earned (and continue to earn) six figures each year in performing.
In 2021, I decided, even as the pandemic was easing, that I didn’t want to go back to full-time performing.
I loved performing. Still do. But I had (and still have) some health issues that prevent me from going full throttle back into performing like I did pre-COVID.
So, I invested over $20,000 in education. Writing for SEO. Designing websites. Google Ads. And on and on.
I invested in my education, and it paid off.
Now, I build websites for entertainers that have these key qualities:
• They are well-designed and based on modern best practices.
• They represent the performer/company well for their target markets.
• The web copy does an effective job of selling their services.
• They are well optimized for SEO.
But I don’t expect you to trust me.
Here are just a few of the sites I’ve built for entertainers in the last few years. You might even recognize some of the names.
But even after looking at these sites, you might be thinking, “Why can’t I build my site myself?”
Simple.
In some ways, web design has never been easier.
Platforms like Wix have made creating and launching a site simple.
You’ve probably seen the ads: “Launch your site in 30 minutes! No coding!”
All of that is true. But without the nuances, the understanding of your market, the best practices of design, accessibility, and a ton of other factors, your new ‘easy’ site won’t be doing its job.
You can learn how to do it yourself.
All the information is out there.
But it takes a long time to master it. I started studying marketing in 1999. I started studying web building a few years later.
And it’s always changing.
Remember that $20,000 I spent? That was just to get current.
To get where I am today took over 25 years of study and implementation.
And the digital marketing landscape is always changing.
I’ll say again: most magicians (me included) didn’t get bitten by the magic bug so we could become full-time marketers.
Me? Since I’m not full-time, I have the bandwidth to devote to this stuff.
And I really enjoy it.
Most magicians I talk to say they can’t stand any of this.
So, here’s the deal. If you need a new website, here is what I can offer:
• A fresh, modern website that appeals to your target market
• Fully optimized to be found on Google searches
• Professionally written web copy to effectively communicate your value to your ideal clients
• All of the “under the hood” details are set up as part of the website package
• Any logos or brand colors incorporated into the site design
Fill out the Contact Form below. You won’t pay anything today. Once I receive your message, I’ll reach out to schedule a Zoom session.
I’ll learn about you, your goals, your markets, and more.
Then I’ll craft a custom offer just for you.
Each web project is customized completely for you.
I don’t want to say, “a 3-page site is X, a 5-page site is Y.” Why? Simple.
I want to create an offer just for you based on your needs. You may only need a one-page site.
Or, like a recent client, you may need over 20 pages!
That and I never use templates. Each site I build is created from the ground up.
You’ll get a one-of-a-kind site that will become your 24/7 salesperson.
