I rolled my eyes again.
“This guy doesn’t get it,” I thought. “Or he was poorly trained.”
I was on a Zoom call with the ‘course concierge’ for essentially a sales call.
I was interested in joining a rather expensive copywriting program to the tune of $8500.
That’s a pretty big investment for me. But I’d been receiving emails and videos about the course for weeks.
And I initially found out about it from another copywriter I really respect.
Everything sounded great. I truly believe this program will take the copywriting part of my career to the next level.
But now I had to sit and listen to this dude on Zoom.
I didn’t know the price of the program going in. I’d pretty much decided to buy the thing as long as it was below $10,000.
The call was a Discovery Call, to see if I was a good fit for the program.
No problem there. I did Discovery Calls for my copywriting business too. I did them primarily to see where my potential clients needed my help.
Mine is a very customized business with no two clients needing the same thing.
So, I understood what was going on with this guy.
My problem with him was his awkward transitions.
There were parts of the presentation that were unscripted. He would ask me questions and have to respond organically.
Then he’d transition to a scripted question. One might be, “And how would this program transform your life?”
Or “How do you see your career in copywriting growing?”
I get what he was doing.
He was trying to get me to internalize what success looked like for me. For me to visualize and powerfully connect my emotions to the idea of this course.
By imagining what success looked, felt, and sounded like.
But this guy was so awkward about it.
Truthfully, he reminded me of the gym rat I had met before joining an expensive gym in my town years ago.
He too was awkward at the scripted stuff.
In both cases, I thought, “Just get on with it.”
There’s an art to using phone scripts. Or scripted questions in a Zoom sakes call.
You need to sound sincere and natural.
I know this because for years I had a script book I carried with me everywhere.
I was so driven to make my dream of quitting my day job and becoming a full-time magician come true. I’d be ready for a professional presentation anytime, anywhere.
I’d learned all about features and benefits when learning how to sell my services. About marketing in general.
I still think phone scripts are a wonderful tool.
You can check out my product which teaches magicians how to write their own phone scripts.
But I learned something very important. The difference between marketing and selling.
If your marketing is in place and set up correctly, it will do a lot of the heavy lifting for you.
My web presence is so strong that most people just want to know how much my shows are.
My web pages are very detailed with a lot of specific information about my shows.
There’s an adage in marketing: The more you tell, the more you sell.
So, I tell a lot on every page.
I refer to specific routines, lessons, and characteristics of each show.
There are pictures on every page. Videos on most pages.
Tons of testimonials throughout the site.
The site probably has over 150 different testimonials throughout.
And I have a blog that includes well-written articles that position me as an expert.
By the time someone goes through my site, they know what kind of performer they’re going to get.
Other than a few logistical questions, it does come down to price for me most of the time.
And when they fill out my contact forms, they get even more information.
All without me lifting a finger.
Putting all of this together wasn’t fast. Or easy. But it’s made the selling part of my business super simple.
And that’s what the $8500 guy didn’t get.
I’d already gone through all the materials. I’d watched the videos. Read the emails.
I’d sold myself.
I don’t want to be too harsh to the guy.
He was just doing what he’d been taught.
My point is twofold: First, if you have everything else in place, a good phone script is icing on the cake.
You won’t have to do much ‘selling’ at all.
But good phone scripts prevent you from rambling. They prevent “uhhhs” and “ahhs” while you’re talking to your prospect.
You only get to make a good first impression once.
Phone scripts help you sound professional and polished.
Second, if you’re going to use phone scripts when taking client calls, make them sound natural.
Just like scripting your show, this naturalness will take practice.
Once you know your phone presentations inside and out, you’ll be able to rearrange things on the fly and respond to your prospect like a real human being.
You won’t sound like you’re reciting passages from a book.
Phone scripts can be a godsend for your business…if used correctly.
And they can help pick up the slack on professionalism if your website isn’t where it needs to be.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, I did invest in the $8500 program.
Don’t worry, this product isn’t anywhere near that price.
Have a great week!
