Snow Stuck Between Your Toes?

Let me tell you a story about my dog Stanlee.

He’s a happy dog, playful and sweet.

But he’s not particularly brave. An encounter with a firefly one night was enough to send him scurrying home.

And during the winter, it’s worse.

We live near Buffalo, NY. Lots of snow.

When we go for walks, Stanlee often gets snow stuck between his paws.

I can always tell because he lifts his foot in the air. Then he tries to walk on three legs.

After a few steps, he always stops and looks at me helplessly.

Then I scoop him up and carry him home.

It’s a good thing he’s only 21 pounds.

The snow between Stanlee’s toes remind me of the business of magic.

Trust me, this will make sense.

In magic, like any business, there are going to be obstacles.

Things that cayuse problems. Things that block your progress.

When I was first getting started as a professional, I had no idea how to get people to contact me for shows.

I went out and got the knowledge I needed.

Problem solved.

Once I started booking shows, I quickly realized the kind of magic I liked wasn’t appropriate for that market.

I went out and got that knowledge, too.

Once again, problem solved.

When I moved from Pittsburgh to Buffalo, I was starting over in a brand-new market.

It would have been so easy to let this stop me.

To give up.

These problems were like snow stuck between my toes.

But I wasn’t like Stanlee.

I kept going.

And built my business to the point where I was grossing $170,000 per year. Maybe to you that’s a lot. Maybe not.

Either way, the point is, I didn’t let my problems stop me.

If you’re just getting started performing magic professionally, there are going to be problems.

There are going to be times when you get snow stuck between your toes.

Are you going to be like my dog Stanlee?

Or are you going to keep going?

Since this is the first issue of The Professional Magician’s Life newsletter, I wanted to set the stage.

There will be performing tips in this newsletter.

There will be marketing tips, too.

But there will also be mindset tips as well.

Having a determined mindset is the biggest asset you a have in this business.

Things will go wrong.

Things will block your path to success. (Hello, COVID!)

But it’s how you respond that will signal your failure or success.

Every magician I know, including myself, has made mistakes.

You’ll make mistakes, too.

And that’s okay.

It’s a part of growing a business.

Without mistakes, we don’t learn to appreciate the success when we have it.

I’m sure I’ll even make mistakes with this newsletter.

So, I ask you, dear reader, to do two things:

1. Give me feedback. What do you want out of this newsletter?

2. Write down your goals. What do you want out of your magic career?

Once you’ve done that, write down the steps you’ll take to achieve those goals.

If you don’t know what steps you need to take, write down who you will ask to help you take those steps.

And there’s already one person you can ask for help.

Me.

And if I don’t know the answer, chances are I know someone who does.

So, let’s get rid of the snow between your toes and grow this together.

Until next time…
