The #1 Ingredient to a Successful Magic Career

Do you want to know the most important secret when it comes to building a successful magic business?

I’ll reveal the secret in a moment, but first I’ll share with you what it is NOT:

You don’t need to be the most technically advanced magician for long-term success.

I’ve earned hundreds of thousands of dollars in my career. Maybe even millions, but to find out for sure I’d have to go through my tax records.

Yet I’m mediocre at sleight-of-hand at best. There was a guy who lived about a half-hour away from me ten years ago. He could run circles around most magicians. His technique was off the charts. But he was broke half the time.

When I knew him, he was horse-trading rent from a local restaurant and living above the kitchen. But he’s had L&L videos and other products showing his amazing skill.

Marketing is also not the most important part of becoming a successful magician. That may surprise those of you who have known me for any length of time. I’m not famous and cut my teeth in magic purely on the strength of my marketing. My skills in that area have allowed me to build a lucrative career.

Fame is also not the most important part of a successful magic career. I’m a big fat nobody and I’ve been successful beyond my wildest dreams.

Now to be clear, all those things are incredibly helpful. Being a great skillful performer can definitely help your business.

And great marketing skills can help your success even if you’re not famous. If you are famous, that definitely can open doors.

But the MOST successful ingredient isn’t any of those things. Here it is…

Planning.

Yup, that’s it.

To be successful, you gotta plan for it. Figure out what your goal is and take action steps to get it done every day.

This newsletter’s space prohibits me from going in-depth on goalsetting in this issue, but it will be the topic of the next several issues.

And that reminds me of something. I’ve had a hard time sticking to my self-imposed schedule of a newsletter every other week or twice a month.

Yet I’ve been able to crank out podcast episodes every week since I launched the thing. And I can assure you producing a podcast is much more complicated than writing a newsletter.

Then I finally realized what my problem was.

I wasn’t planning the newsletter. Writing has always come very easy to me, so I assumed, wrongly, that the newsletter would just write itself.

In other words, I didn’t plan for it.

To rectify that, I did the same thing I did for my podcast. I mapped out content for over a year…weekly.

That’s right, starting now, The Professional Magician’s Life will become a weekly newsletter moving forward.

Part of the planning process involves setting hard deadlines. With that in mind, each issue of this newsletter will go out each weekend – Saturday or Sunday, depending on my schedule.

And I love goals and deadlines! Now that I have set it in stone, this will be easy to factor into my schedule.

This issue, while it delves into my newsletter (and is thus rather “inside baseball”) is an important lesson for your career.

Don’t just assume success will happen. Create your action steps and get moving. If what you are doing is not working, assess where the problem is and make changes.

It took me a couple of months to figure out what the problem was, but once I realized it, I made changes.

Building a magic career is not easy. There will be roadblocks and problems. So, plan for those problems. What will you do? What steps will you take?

Every person is different, so my steps may be different than your steps. But by planning for success and creating a game plan, you can be successful if you stick to it.

Next issue, we’ll talk about goal setting. There’s a right way to do it and lots of wrong ways.

Thanks for reading! See you next time.
